Cecil Sharp collected this folk song from William Crockford in Somerset. Crockford was known as ‘the conjuror’ and kept many old-fashioned customs and beliefs. He told Sharp that they wassailed the apple trees in his village of Bratton every year on 17th January. They would meet in the orchard about seven or eight o'clock in the evening, join hands and dance in a ring round an apple tree singing this song.
