Printed versions of Bridget O’Malley (Brid Og NiMhaille) appear as early as 1872 in The Shamrock, an Irish literary newspaper published in Dublin. The song became better known when Peter Kennedy collected a version from Conal O'Donnell, a Gaelic teacher in county Mayo in 1962, and published it in his Folksongs of Britain and Ireland (1964).
