In 1905, George Gardiner sent a Cornish tune without words to fellow folksong collector, Lucy Broadwood. She married the melody to a lyric attributed to George Syron, a black inmate of an asylum, one of several ‘Bedlams’ set up in the 18th century. Gustav Holst liked the tune, set it first for military band and later, with Syron’s lyrics, for choir. Zack Stephens has simplified Holst’s arrangement.
