Edward Casswell (1814-1878) published his poem Hymn for Christmas in 1858 (first line ‘See, amid the winter’s snow’). John Goss (1800-1880) set the poem to his tune Humility in 1871. Caswell and Goss were Hampshire men. Edward Caswell was born in Yateley and John Goss spent his childhood in Fareham and Ringwood. Their careers took them elsewhere, Father Caswell to The Oratory in Birmingham after he converted to Catholicism and Professor Sir John Goss to the Royal Academy of Music in London.
