Zack Stephens' score is in four parts (SATB). There are five verses and a chorus after each.

The lyrics appear in the 1656 play Actaeon and Diana by Robert Cox. We don’t know whether Cox is the lyricist or whether he borrowed a popular song. The tune is older – from William Ballet's lute book (c1590), then reprinted in John Playford’s The Dancing Master (1651) with the title Stanes (sic) Morris. The tune was married to the words by William Chappell in his Popular Music of the Olden Time (London, 1859). He used the spelling ‘Staines’, although there is no known connection with the Thameside town in north-west Surrey.
