The lyrics are by Nahum Tate (1652-1715), an Irishman appointed Poet Laureate in 1692. Poverty-stricken throughout much of his life, Tate died in the Liberty of the Mint at Southwark in London, then a special jurisdiction that offered some refuge from his creditors. The hymn tune Cranbrook was written in 1805 by Canterbury shoe-maker Thomas Clark and named after the local village of Cranbrook in Kent. The melody is now better known in the UK as the tune of On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at.
